  • Hexagonal chikku kOlam - 13
  • sOnA pAtterns with strings - 1
  • Hexagonal chikku kOlam - 12
  • sOnA patterns placed side by side and assembled into a square
  • Another sOnA border frame

Rangoli: Hexagonal chikku kOlam - 13

The basic motif is a 3x2 one. This was rotated at intervals of 60 deg and assembled as shown. There are two coloured strings. The pattern has a 32 symmetry (120 deg rotation about the vertical axis and three 180 deg rotations in the plane of the screen making an angle of 60 deg with each other). Enjoy!

Rangoli: sOnA pAtterns with strings - 1

Here are two patterns woven with strings. We have a basic 3x4 dot pattern with a single string at the top. A sona square with this basic pattern has two strings (red and green) with the symmetry 222 (180 degree rotations about a vertical axis, and two diagonal 180 deg rotations in the plane of the figure). If you ignore the colours, then the symmetry is 422 (90 deg rotations about a vertical axis and four 180 deg rotations at 45 deg in the plane), Enjoy!

Rangoli: Hexagonal chikku kOlam - 12

This has been assembled with a 2x3 motif on a hexagonal net. Enjoy!

Rangoli: sOnA patterns placed side by side and assembled into a square

Two single line sOna patterns (3 rows and four columns) are placed side by side and joined together. This motif is assembled into a square. This has 6 independent woven strings. I have shown them in three colours to preserve the four-fold symmetry. There is a vertical four-fold axis (90 deg rotation) perpendicular to the screen and four two-fold axes at 45 deg ib the plane of the screen (two - horizontal and vertical and two diagonal - NE-SW and NW-SE). Enjoy!

Here is another sOnA border frame. Enjoy!

Rangoli: sOnA square for an extended 4x3 dot pattern

A 4x3 dot pattern was extended to obtain a 2,4,6,4,2 dot pattern. A single line motif for this dot pattern was made and four of these were assembled to get this new pattern. It is also a woven pattern with just two colours. You may see that this has two perpendicular two fold axes in the plane of the screen and one perpendicular to it. Enjoy!

Rangoli: Sweet packet :-)

Here is a hexagonal chikku kOlam for a triangle (dots 9 to 1). There are five independent strings. The second one on the left top is actually light yellow, but somehow it came out almost white, but didn't feel like repeating the whole thing again Wink For some reason, when I see this, I am reminded of my childhood days when we used to purchase packets of sweet and savoury in shops with heaps of them arranged as pyramids. They used to take dried lotus leaves and make a pyramidal type of packet with a string tied all over. In those days, they used to cost one anna (six paise) when rice used to be sold for one rupee a paDi (not kilo). Well, any way, enjoy!

Rangoli: sOnA bOrder (r3 c4)

I took the basic motif of dots with three rows and four columns (single string) and built them as shown to get a frame with borders with the given motif. (I have deliberately left out the number of strings. It is a problem for you to find out Smile I believe this frame will serve as a nice background for photographs. Enjoy!
