About Spring Garden Kolams - Daffodils : PRINT

Dots - Interlaced 15 - 8

I have been trying to complete this kolam for the last two weeks but something or the other came in the way and only today I managed to complete it. Though I am not fully satisfied with the outcome I am going ahead and uploading it because I am sure it will take much longer if I keep it and try to get a fully satisfied product. Let me know what you think friends Smile

When I see this kolam I am reminded of the beautiful poem I learnt in school written by William Wordsworth

"Daffodils" (1804)

I wander'd lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,

They stretch'd in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:

I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

By William Wordsworth (1770-1850).

I remember this poem. If I remember it right, I was in 8th std when I first learned about a flower called daffodil. :). Not sure if I ever got to see one when I was in India.

The flowers and the leaves look beautiful. Two things would make this pattern even more prettier; a smoother background (this has too much pixel-scaling), and the removal of the red filaments. The red strokes gives it a sort of hibiscus look to it, and it looks out of place only because the daffodils don't have such elements in their structure. But the yellow funnel shaped petal defines the whole shape as a "daffodil", and I'm so glad you made it. Smile

Lata actually you hit the nail on the head. As I had already mentioned I was trying to complete this kolam for quite a long time and when I completed it, I added this effect also in a hurry and uploaded it. In fact I looked at this kolam only couple of days ago (I mean after I had made it) and it hit me straight away that I should have changed the background. Of course as you have also mentioned the red filaments don't fit in a daffodil, but the kolam I have in my collection has these extra extensions and again I never realised this until you mentioned it to me now. Maybe if you don't mind, we can rename this flower as DAFFOCUS or HIBIDILS (hehe). Yes, we also learned this poem in the 8th std. Thanks Padma and Jaya Smile

Hi Judy, this daffodill kolam is really very beautiful, i agree with lata too. it would have been more elegant if it was on a different coloured background.

Thanks for your comment JKM. Yes they look different because they are a fusion of daffodil and hibiscus Blum 3 Thanks Rajam - indeed a hybrid variety - who knows maybe someday we will see a real flower like this Smile

Judy, DAFFOCUS is very beautiful. If the shape of the outer layer petals are changed, then it will turn into DAFFODILS fully.
I wonder everybody's memory power - still remember what you learned in high school !!!!!!!

Judy you brought back nostalgic feelings of my school days ... I have never seen daffodils at all and I remembered the way I imagined myself amongst them when I read this poem.. its indeed a beautiful poem... as for the kolam... its beautiful even if done in a hurry... yes I agree that the background could have been different yet it looks pretty

Hai, Judy, a very very beautiful design. Even i would like to learn the designing. How can I start and which are the softwares required (only photo shop). This I had asked the others in Bangalore Meet. Where can I get coaching for this. Thanks for the beautiful design.

Brindha, yes the moment I saw daffodils in the spring garden, I immediately thought of this poem (I used to love it when I was in school), I too, like you Pushpa, have never seen real daffodils but used to imagine myself in a field of them while learning this poem. Happy I brought childhood memories to so many of you. Padma you should start learning MS Paint first then graduate to Photoshop. No amount of training outside will make you learn it better than playing with all the tools yourself - atleast that is the way I learnt most of the softwares.
