About Islamic art - 2 - Cairo Pentagons : PRINT

The figure is self explanatory.
Left top - A hexagon (not regular) is chosen, long along the vertical.
Left middle - More vertical hexagons are added to this.
Left bottom - One set of vertical hexagons is superimposed on another horizontal set that is obtained by rotating the above by 90 deg
Right - More such figures are added to obtain this pattern.
Symmetry - 222 (Three mutually perpendicular 180 deg rotations)

This has green pentagons running along the vertical and the reed pentagons running along the horizontal. This type of arrangement will be very nice for tiling the floor.

Note: Those who stay in the middle east, please go around and enjoy the unique Islamic architecture. Symmetrical patterns and calligraphy are like a representation of God to the Muslims.

Lovely pattern, JKM sir and thanks for the explanation. As Suguna said, it looks like a then koodu.

Thanks my dear friends. Even though this has an apparent resemblance to a beehive, the beehive cells are regular hexagons as seen here - http://martygumblesworth.wordpress.com/2011/03/
