Mangoes and mango trees are in existence since at least 6000 years. It is said to have originated in the present Bengal, Bangladesh, northeastern India and Burma. Buddhist monks not only spread Buddhism in foreign lands, but also mango seeds and trees. The traders took it to the middle east and the Portugese to Africa, Europe and to the new world. There is mention of mangoes in Ramayana and Mahabharata. We talk of kalpavRksha, a celestial tree that grants all wishes. The mango tree is perhaps that tree!
