Bihu
The Assamese in the northeast welcome the new year with the Bihu festivals. Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, is the Hindu New Year in Assam. In 2008, Rongali Bihu is on April 14. Rongali Bihu is the most festive and joyful of all the Bihus.
The ladies make special dumplings called pitha. Pitha is a special class of rice preparation generally made only on special occasions like Bihu in Assam. The pitha preparations have a base made of either rice or wheat, and a raw uncooked batter is prepared out of these, which will eventually be used to make small pouches to be filled with sweet or savory fillings.
