World Health Day
On April 7 every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) and hundreds of people from all over the world celebrate World Health Day, or the anniversary of the founding of WHO. On this day, people get together to participate in various activities, meetings, and programs to promote awareness and educate the public for a topic carefully picked for that year. Conferences are held for doctors and health workers, and public talks and shows are hosted throughout the week to help create a more deeper understanding of the ‘selected’ issue. During the week, school-level exhibits and informational displays are shown to the children, to open their eyes to the issues of the world around them. Free or affordable medical checkups are also organized throughout the world.
This year’s topic, Ageing and Health (with the theme ‘Good health adds life to years’), focuses on the more older generations of today. Often, elderly people face damaging stereotypes and cliche remarks that prevent them from enjoying the later years of life. WHO encourages people to respect their elders, and build a better society where the elderly are looked at with admiration and courtesy.
Let’s take a pledge to improve our lives, no matter how small the changes may be. I, for one, want to increase the amount of vegetables I eat and try to not use the car as often! What are some things you can change?
