Valentine Day and movies with the theme of love

Now that the Valentine day is upon us, I would request readers to participate in choosing the best movies with the theme of love. Please justify your choices too. I would request you not to exceed three choices. You may choose any Indian movie, old or new. Regards! - mOhana

P.S. My choices are:

(1) nAndi in kannaDa - For a 1964 movie, the presentation, both thematic and artistic, is unbelievable. Acting by rAjkumAr, hariNi and kalpanA is simply superb. The story centers around a married school master who loses his wife in child delivery. he manages to bring up their son alone. The child is deaf. Still he manages with the help of the neighbours. After some time, they leave to another town. The school master remembers a girl whom he met when he took his students to the Nandi Hills on an excursion. She is deaf and dumb. He marries her and manages even to teach her to communicate. She was taking care of the child, but during the Deepavali festival the boy dies in a fire accident. She did not hear any of this as she was deaf. After some time, she too becomes pregnant and delivers a child who is not deaf. Both the loving husband and wife dedicate to teaching the deaf and dumb kids.

(2) 16 vayadinilE in tamizh - I like this not only for the fine acting of kamal, Sree and rajanI, but mainly for the choice of the theme. Even though the theme is one of the beaten track variety, the setting in a rustic atmosphere lends an air of authenticity to it. The only blemish in the movie is the excessive makeup of Sree.

(3) sparsh in hindI - A visually impaired person, the principal of a blind school was going to meet his doctor and on the way he listens to a song and ends up at the door of the singer. She ends up as a volunteer in his school. Love blossoms between them and this is the crux of the rest of the story. Brilliant acting by Shabana Azmi and Nasiruddin Shah.

I never get bored of watching Mouna ragam (tamil movie), Varusham 16 (tamil movie), and Silsila (Hindi movie). Smile

I too like maunarAgam for the fine acting of rEvati and excellent background music by iLayarAjA. Do you know, maNiratnaM used a few shots from his first directorial venture pallavi anupallavi (kannaDa) in maunarAgam too? In fact, in that generation (seventies and eighties), sujAtA, rEvati, suhAsini and saritA stand out among the women. suhAsini and saritA did well in kannaDa and telugu too. Regards! - mOhana

many more...but given the three choices.... goes for saakshatkaara (kannada - rajkumar, jamuna, prithvirajkapoor), AmruthaDhaare(kannada - ramya, dhayaan), You Me Hum (hindi - kajol, ajaydevagan)

Anirudh Saakshatkaara was my favorite too and you me and hum a beautiful story of how a husband tries to woo back his wife who has memory loss, I dont know why this film did not do well, I liked it a lot Smile

yep ...me too wonder, why it did not go well. I think there is some curse...anytime Kajol & Ajay have paired together...and almost all the times the movies were good, still they flopped at box office. Anyways we have watched those good movies, expect them to make best ones in comming years & break the curse Smile

I like the Old Movie " kalyana Parisu" actors Gemini Ganeshan and Saroja Devi directed by Sridhar.Love means not possessive but sacrificing for others Happiness.. this theme is very well depicted in this picture.Ofcourse acting and the music are superb.
( Thullaadha manamum thullum... sung by Gikki is my alltime favourite song).
2. "Maro charithra" in Telugu with Kamal and Saritha...( Tamil and Hindi versions also good)
Though tragedy, Balachander has taken it so nicely with all his punches. Acting of Kamal and Sarith superb!
3. " Mere Mehboob " in Hindi with Rajendra Kumar and Sadhana.More than acting, I love those songs sung by Lata and Mohammed Rafi in that movie.
The list is more but due to the restriction no. 3 I stop here.

Rajam," kalyana parisu" and "maro charithra are the two films I want to mention here. Now I wonder same films are mentioned by you.I don't know Hindi.so no opinion about the third one.But I like the Hindi movie "Hum Aapke Hain Koun"(Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit).

I too like kalyANa pariSu. This, along with edirpArAdadu and miNDa Sorgam, is a gerat movie of the fifties. When the Tamil movies were very stuffy with alliterative dialogue and excessive mother-son complexes, kalyANa pariSu was a fresh breeze with contemporary story and dialogue. SrIdhar, rAjA (don't forget his assistant the great orchestra arranger Sebastian) and sarOja-gaNESan with tangavElu did wonders. Yes, when I was writing an essay (with my friend parachUri SrInivAs) on A M Raja, I learnt that tuLLAda manamum tuLLum was jikkI's favourite too. Another movie with the same cast, ADiperukku too has some fantastic music - kAvEri Oram, kaNNizhanda manidargaL, tanimaiyilE inimai, etc. marO charitra is too tragic for me. That is why I avoided tragedies in my choice. mErE mehboob too is a fantastic movie with lilting songs. Who can forget the ethereal beauty of sAdhanA, one of my favourite Hindi actors. Thanks for the memories, rAjammA ma'am. Regards! - mOhana

after reading the comments about kalyaNa parisu, i watched it over you-tube. Then got to know same movie has been remade in kannada after so many years in 1981-2 as premanubandha (Manjula, K.Vijaya, Srinath)....see the co-incidence the heronie sister's name in both the movies is Vijaya. This movie too had classic songs from Rajan-Naagendra,
karedaaga neenu barabaradeenu-S.Janaki
baagila terediruve thaaye--S.Janaki (famous LakshmiPooja song)
beLadingalondu -SPB
hosa hosa bayakeya minchinali- S.J & SPB

Lata same pinch dear Mouna Ragam is my favorite movie. I also like Sadma/moondram pirai with beautiful songs. Johnny by Mahendran starring Rajnikanth and Sridevi with one of my favorite songs Yen vaanile ore venila and Katril yendhan geetham are just superb. Roja, by Mani Rathnam. Twilight is something I love to watch for the different story of loving a Vampire :O. The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, the unusual story of loving a female boss who is snooty and stone-hearted only to know later how emotional she really is. Thambiku yendha Ooru, with the wonderful kadhalin deepam ondru song, salangai oli, Kamal Hassan and Jayapradha. Mozhi story of a music director who falls for a deaf and dumb girl with the wonderful Kaatrin Mozhi song. Mughal-e-azam Mohe Panghat Pe nanda lal and pyar kiya tho darna kya, Oh I named more than 3 is it Blum 3 Blum 3 :8)
