The Times Margazhi Contest is back and it’s time to colour the world

It’s that time of the year when women step out of their homes even before the crack of dawn, braving the nip in the air to colour their streets with some striking kolams.
Kolams in myriad designs, colours and intricate dots mark the Margazhi season and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that women are at their creative best at this time of the year.
The Times Margazhi Kolam contest is back, keeping in mind the enthusiasm among women to bring out their best in creating kolams. If you are someone who loves to experiment and give a novel twist to the dots and designs, then it’s time to don your creative hat and take out the kola podi and be a part of this contest.
Our panel of judges will select the best among the entries received and in the final week, readers of the best 100 entries received during the month will be called for a grand finale.

I still remember my school days when I used to see kolams and rangolis all over my neighbourhood. Even today, my mother makes it a point to draw a kolam or rangoli on every special occasion. Sometimes, she refers to books and at times comes up with her own creative designs. I fill the colours for her. I am happy that people in Chennai have not forgotten their tradition and it’s great to see the vibrant colours and hues all over.

Kolams take me back to my childhood as I learnt them from my grandmom. The entire street in my place would be filled with beautiful kolams in the early morning. Even today, I decorate our house with kolams on festive occassions and it’s always very exciting. Some people today might consider it old-fashioned but kolam is an art form that requires creativity and people who do it are artists in their own right.
