Non Indian languages in middle schools

One of our daughters took Spanish as her "other" language to study in her middle as well as high school. There is always a debate in our house as to what language to take whenever someone needs to take it for academic reasons. Friends also recommend French, because it is easier to score high marks - according to students here in our neighborhood. I wonder how things are in India? For instance, given the choice between French and German, what do you think is the "most popular" language, as far as the kids are concerned? Any thoughts/experience?

I forgot to mention that my daughter enjoyed her classes in Spanish, and it was not hard to score good too.

My daughter who finished her engineering just now ,had to option to choose between Japanese ,French and German as learning a foreign lang was compulsory. She choose Japanese and felt that spoken language is easier when compared to the written Japanese lang.Whereas my younger daughter who is in her + 12 choose sanskrit as she feels she can score more marks and the time spent on it will be less when compared to learning tamil. And 75% of the sanskrit paper can be answered in english

My daughter mastered German language while doing her post graduation. But most people prefer French I think. In my college days, I took Advanced Thamizh as one of the subject. But while doing graduation took Hindi as 2nd language since I hated politics preventing us from learning that language in Tamil naadu..
Hindi I took mainly to enjoy the good old Hindi film music and its lyrics.

Both Anita and Gerry took French as their second language from school itself and continue in college too.. I think French is the choice here in India because marks can be scored easily and also I believe abroad French is the next most spoken language after English?? Is that right??
