Ganesh Chaturthi - Go Green!

The Indian stores in the U.S are ready with clay Ganesh statues, for the upcoming festival. Usually, we do not buy the colorfully decorated statues for the celebration. We are content with our mini sized Ganeshji made of turmeric.
I used to be in charge of buying the statue for the festival while growing up, and back then, only plain Ganesh clay statues were available for sale (for the immersion ritual).

interesting turmeric Ganesha Lataji...so you buy it every year or make it on your own?
i feel the makers should paint with eco-friendly color rather than using those leadbased ones.

Yes, Anirudh - so many times we have seen news articles of a whole lot of fish dying in the sea after immersion day because of the contamination due to the colours and other chemicals involved...
At my place it is always the clay ones as we immerse it in our well so we cant affort any problems with the water (though we dont use that well now).. I always smeer the entire clay statue with sandanam so Ganesh is cool when he is at home...

No Anirudhji, we don't buy any Ganesh statues here. I'm talking about the small instant-Ganesh turmeric cone that most of us make to place in the altar before we begin any major festival-puja. This kind of a home-made Ganesha is also easy for immersion after the festival is over.
Judy, looks like you celebrate most of the hindu festivals too. I think people who get to celebrate both hindu as well as christian festivals have double the fun, and get double blessings!
