Agony and anxiety due to H1NI infection
I have just come out a little bit from a very tense fortnight full of worries. My nephew(33) got infected with this H1N1 Virus and has been struggling to come out of it. All these days, he has been in ICU (isolated cabin),on ventilator, but now showing positive signs of recovery at a very slow pace. Yes, we are a bit relaxed now as he is improving bit by bit, still praying for his fast recovery.
He had got cold and cough and the first doctor we went treated him for a regular viral infection. His cough worsened and he spent sleepless nights and so we went to another doctor, who x-rayed and said he had severe lung infection. By chance we got an appointment with a pulmonologist the same day and he was immediately admitted and tested for swine flu, that showed positive. The infection spread so much overnight and he was shifted to ICU and is on ventilator since then. For about a week he was stable in that critical condition, and then slowly now is showing improvement. We all have spent dreadful days and nights, but are now slowly relieved. Hats off to the great team work of the doctors and their patience and care.
I suggest that we all ought to be careful and not take cold and cough very easy. It has to be monitored well and the least symptoms of worsening must be taken seriously and dealt with by seeing proper doctors.

I know how it feels to have a very sick person in the family and worrying about it always. Don't worry, he will get through. Yes, I read in paers that H1N1 is coming back in India. By the way, for all those others, please get vaccination against H1N1. I read in papers that Indians are not in favour of this and much of the vaccine is going unused. We had one here last year and there are no side reactions. In fact, this year's vaccine, soon to appear, is for both H1N1 and ordinary seasonal flu. This must be the lesson you must take from this episode.

I'm glad to read that your nephew's condition is improving.
Apparently there are people who seem to think that getting these type of seasonal (flu) vaccinations makes them non-resistant to other strong antibiotics/medications. And, they don't want to subject their kidneys to newer drugs on the market. These type of thoughts and theories made their rounds here in the bay area quite recently too.
