Ganesh Chaturthi
This year, GANESH CHATURTHI will be celebrated on the 29th August, 2014 - Friday.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by people all over India, and abroad. Lord Ganesha is believed to be the remover of obstacles and the giver of good health and fortune. Devotees bring home idols made of paper mache or clay of Lord Ganesha to celebrate this festival. The Lord is worshipped for an odd number of days; for a day and a half, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, or 11 days depending on one’s tradition.
People celebrate by setting up Pandals, and by participating in spiritual street processions. Modak (a sweet dumpling) is prepared and offered to the God, along with fruits, flowers, and coconuts. On the last day of worship the Ganesha’s idol is taken out to be immersed traditionally at a water source such as a lake or a beach.
