Modern Love poems

SAtavAhana hAla was supposed to have ruled the southern India in the early centuries of the Christian era. He is said to have written 700 poems in prAkRta. Unlike most poetic works of that era which dealt with gods and kings, these dealt with the themes of love, nature, union, separation, etc. I was trying to imagine how hAla would have written his poems in the modern era. Enjoy!

1) It is night time. The husband, the wife and the child were lying on the bed and the child was sleeping with content. The husband was looking at his beautiful wife, but the wife had her attention riveted on the child.

He looked at her and the desire swelled
He was gently running his fingers on her soft body
But she
she was gently running her fingers on the softer body
of the child
and lost in the dream world

2) Devotees were thronged in a temple. There was a dEvIpriya (a youth fond of women) who was looking at a dEvi (a woman goddess) who was lost in the meditation of the real dEvi (goddess). The dEvi (goddess) was watching all this play and a flower dropped from her hand.

She was praying by looking at Her
He was preying by looking at her
She was smiling by dropping a flower

3) They were waiting for a bus at the bus stop. He looked at her and she looked at him. In the meanwhile, the bus stopped, and passengers got down and got up, and left. They were still standing.

He stared at her
She glanced at him
Poetry filled their hearts
The bus arrived
and left
They were still there
exchanging glances
and reciting poems
wordless, but thoughtful

4) It was a spring evening and people were strolling in a park. The wind was blowing and flowers falling from the trees on to the floor. Flowers were also falling from the young woman's hair. The youth was gathering the flower that dropped from her hair.

Beautiful evening
Rosy sunset
Gentle breeze
Beautiful flowers falling
to weave a carpet
Beautiful woman
The mischievous wind blows
A single flower falls
from her wavy hair
on the colourful carpet
The youth picks it
That flower
That lucky flower
will never fade or wither

5) It is night time and getting late. The woman was expecting the man. But the man, he was on his computer, browsing still. The gods heard her prayer. The power was off. Good night!

It is getting late
Why don't you come
Can your computer hug
Can it touch
Can it kiss
Does it have life
Does it have love
Can it become angry
like me?
O God!
The power went off
Darkness engulfed

6) It is summer and quite hot. The youth stopped at a wayside shop and bought a cool drink and was sipping. Then he watched a girl pass by. Rainbow colours sparkled before his eyes. His shirt became wet with the drink he thought he was sipping.

Hot sun
cool drink
Drop by drop
thirst is quenched
Thirst is not quenched
She the cool iris
manifests from nowhere
cool drink all over
the sweat drenched shirt
Iris smiles
