How was your Pongal Lakshmi? What did you make besides Pongal and vadai? I never really had the chance to find out what the menu is like for people originally from Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh during this occasion. While I'm talking about something else, other than rangolis, I would like to point out that people like you and me can talk about other general things that interests us here too
I enjoy gardening (would post some pictures some time next month), baking and reading other than going for movies and get-togethers. I often wonder what some of our members' interests are...would be fun to find out, don't you think?

Lata , see here how we do ,
In Karnataka people celebrate it as " Shankranthi " , as usual prayers is for sun god , usually in the courtyard of the house along with suguarcane, turmeric plants , flowers, fruits etc.. along with they boil the milk ...... and allow the milk
to overflow ... that shows the happines have no boundries in this house. During first day of UTTHARAYANA the sun changes the position and moves towords MAKARA RASI. On this day Karnataka people exchanging sesame & jaggery mixture alongwith sugarcane and banana. This is called 'ellu beerodhu " , this simply means " ELLU BELLA KOTTU ,
OLLE MATHUAADU " ( i.s. GIVE SESAME SEADS ALONG WITH JAGGERY AND TALK ALL GOOD THINGS FOR PERIOD TO COME ) ... Am sure this Ellu + Jaggery do has some scientific reasons which am not aware pl excuse me.
Now looking at kitchen , we do sweet pongal, Dall vada , and other usual ( depending upon our happines ) , we can... no limit & exchange the same with our neighbours..

It is nice to know all these tiny tid-bits of information from everyone, be it back from the olden days, or now from the cities. Thank you ladies, for sharing your experiences. I would categorize these in different sections of the site one of these days (just to make sure they don't get burried deep in the site).
The village experiences that Viji ma'm and Rajamma ma'm talked about in their comments makes me homesick, actually village-sick! I wish I could visit my Jeyam Paati for this occasion who follows these traditions even today!

We also have eLLu and bella. Today is also a pitru divasa
and that is why the sesame comes into play. bella is there
because of the new harvest. I don't remember but they used
to shower the little children with bOrE haNNu. Or is it
for some other festival? If I remember right bOrE haNNu
is called eLandaM pazham in tamiL and rEgi paMDu in telugu.
Some people perform satyanArAyaNa vrata too today.
O well, we are daydreaming here in the cold when the guys
in India are enjoying!
Regards! - mOhana

Pongal was ok. Yes I did the usual Pongal-vadai, and the typical south-indian sambar/avial type of dishes. Nothing fancy. No fancy pictures, just a plain and simple one...and the picture has nothing to do with the "boosting" part
Now why are the dishes in front of a computer instead of being on a table?
I have a long distance friend here in U.S who enjoys teasing me whenever I mailed pictures of some special dishes/things - meaning that since we lived miles apart, I could easily use old photos and claim to have made them for the current event! So, I started taking pictures of things right in front of my monitor with her latest emails displayed on the screen. That's what it took to convince this friend that I am not too lazy...well maybe only just a little, and I should add that I got used to sending pictures in that manner to many people now

We've to wait until the 20th? God, that's going to be so hard! But, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait Lakshmi
Viji mam, thank you. I think people like me who don't live in India, have the added pressure of observing these occasions, because if we don't, our kids don't have any "examples"...in other words they can't learn any of our customs. So, I've this policy of observing all the main festivals with simple customs whether it happens to be school day or not. It gets hard sometimes, but if I take it easy, my girls would tend it take it more easy later on, and this thought has been my inspiration ever since
